STUDIO A
Based around a heavily modified and updated MCI JH542C console, this is our premier Studio A. This MCI JH542C is a fully featured dual inline 42 channel console, with amazing warm vintage inductor EQs, transformer ins and outs, Jensen microphone transformers, discrete API type mic preamps. Quad into stereo discrete Class A mix buss. 96 inputs during mixdown. ProTools-controlled discrete-VCA group automation. 4 faders per channel. 5 sends, 1 stereo. This feeds two recording setups, or both simultaneously; a Studer A80 MkIV 24 track tape machine, and an Apogee Symphony I/O MkII with 50 ch of mkII and SE converters, and the DAW of your choosing, featuring a huge selection of industry standard plug-ins by Universal Audio, SSL, Autotune, FabFilter, Soundtoys, Waves, and Celemony.
Our spacious tracking room features 13 ft ceilings, acoustically designed and treated hardwood pine walls, a beautiful vintage Persian carpet centerpiece, and is filled with a selection of vintage classics. Included for all clients is a collection of vintage guitar and bass amps, a rare and classic Hammond organ, a great rock and roll grand piano, two different types of Fender Rhodes, a Wurlitzer, some quirky vintage combo organs, multiple Leslies, a handful of classic drum kits, timpani, and a wealth of whacky percussion options. Inside this is a large iso booth, dubbed the "acoustic room", containing a second smaller grand piano and an acoustic harpsichord, a wide selection of acoustic guitars, and a classic late 40s RCA 44bx mic set up as the go to vocal option. This allows for live tracking piano and drums with a great drum room tone, but still isolated live piano or acoustic guitar, as well as lead vocal. All this can be rearranged to meet the demand of any specialized set up such as string and brass ensembles, choirs, or left in place for quick set up and transition times to get the most out of your studio time and budget.
Analog mixing or summing is done to a number of rare vintage tape machines (stereo, quad or parallel stereo mixing), or back into ProTools through our high end Burl and Apogee SE mastering converters. Featuring a well curated set classic outboard preamps, compression, and EQ, and a huge amount of analog effects supplied by a large Eurorack modular system with over a dozen specialized effects modules, a wide variety of possibilities are avaliable in both production and mixing.
Because of the modular system and workflow, we opted for mostly Eurorack effects devices to allow more possibilities, more control, often better sound (analog when possible), and more fun and integration into the analog hands-on mixing domain. Rather than just setting and forgetting a patch in a Harmonizer, all sounds and parameters can be manipulated in real time by hand, or joysticks/faders, or automated with CVs and recorded in the computer using an Expert Sleepers CV control system. It's even possible to patch Euro CVs into the console VCA automation! All Eurorack effects boxes are easy to access so the mix workflow is logical, and the modular is not faraway and difficult to reach like in many studios.
Feel free to contact us with technical questions or for more information on anything!
The gear list is updated every few months, but always subject to change!
